How to
repair and replace a faulty Dell laptop AC power jack.
Laptops are today the
preferred choice of most PC users since they can be easily carried anywhere.
This freedom of mobility ensures that users remain in touch with friends and
business associates even when they are on the move. Moreover, it also allows
them to work even while travelling. However, one of the biggest pitfalls of this
freedom is the constant danger of damage due to accident or negligent handling
which may cause the laptop to fall and get damaged.
AC power jacks are quite
susceptible to damage during any such accidental fall or impact. Now, every
laptop receives power from only two sources – an AC/DC power cord or a set of
batteries. Now the batteries can only last as long as they are charged and
therefore if your laptop’s AC power jack is damaged then you must immediately
attend to it so that you do not have to face the dangers of losing your
important data.
Your laptop’s
Dell AC power jack can often get disconnected from the motherboard due to an
accidental fall or impact or due to someone stepping over the power cord. While
it may seem like a complicated situation to many, repairing AC power jack is
very easy and can be done at home using the most basic tools like tweezers and
Phillips screwdriver set.
Find a flat surface like
a kitchen counter and place your laptop with its face down. Remove all the
screws including the screws that hold together the screen. Also, since screws
may be of different sizes, it would be a good idea to keep them separately and
mark where you took them out from. Remove the power cords and batteries and make
sure that the laptop is not connected to any power source. Once you have taken
out all the screws from the body it is time to unscrew the screws that hold
together the hard disk covers in place. You can now pull out the housing and the
hard drive.
Next you’ll have to
remove the screen. Gently unlatch the two tabs that hold the screen in place.
However, make sure that you pull it gently so that the wires do not break or get
separated. Remove the crews that connect the keyboard to the laptop and gently
lift it once all the screws have been removed. Make sure you do not disconnect
the cable that connects the keyboard with the motherboard.
Now locate the AC power
jack by identifying the opening in the rear side where the power cord is
inserted. Look around for the metal jack that is dislodged due to which the
power to your laptop has been cut off. The jack fits into a circular plastic
piece on the motherboard. Put it back into the proper position. In some cases it
may also require some soldering. Soldering devices can be easily bought at any
neighbourhood electrical devices store in your neighbourhood. However, make sure
that you use tweezers to pick up the metal jack since it is quite small in size
and will be difficult to handle with bare hands.
Now just reassemble your
laptop and put on the power cord. Connect to mains and check if it works now.
